Web and Social media
As the print editor-in-chief, my experience with website and social media is limited, but I have still found my own was to utilize web and social media tools to promote my work as a journalist and further my success.
web and Social Media
Social media has taken over journalism. It’s no secret that social media has made print, and online products less and less popular in recent years. However, instead of letting that discourage us journalists, we can use it to our advantage.
Over my time on The Dispatch, I’ve noticed that our most popular form of content is our social media page, we pump our regular posts that cover on-campus happenings, sports events and others. Recently we’ve began using it to also promote stories online or in the print edition (see support of journalism for more). This has driven up our engagement with those stories.
I often use my personal account to promote posts and photo stories when The Dispatch instagram posts to ensure it is reaching the most people possible
I decided to use this strategy for my own work as well. This past year I created an instagram account exclusively for promoting my work in reporting and design. With this account, I have created multiple posts including graphics from my story and relevant pull quotes that are shared with a direction to online cite. This way, my peers on social media can be connected with my work, and the work of the dispatch, through a personalized route.
The graphics I incorperate into the posts for this account are specifically redesigned to fit the social media format, to maximize engagement and get students interested in my, and The Dispatch’s, coverage.
